THREAT OF MARINE EROSION IN SOULAC-SUR-MER

GENERAL CONTEXT

Soulac-sur-Mer and Le Verdon-sur-Mer are emblematic resorts of the northern Médoc coastline. The phenomena of marine erosion, exacerbated by the presence of the Gironde estuary, are of exceptional intensity. The first works to combat marine erosion were built in 1841, and many other works were subsequently built, notably to protect the Soulac-sur-Mer seafront and to stabilise the Pointe de Grave. Some areas, not very urbanised, remain under the direct influence of erosion and buildings (such as the Signal) and in this case the Sables d'Argent campsite are threatened in the short term.

THE MEANS USED TO COMBAT MARINE EROSION

In terms of flexible active control, it is planned to support natural processes in conjunction with the ONF and the Conservatoire du Littoral, particularly in the context of sustainable beach redevelopment projects, communication and awareness-raising on dune environments, and additional studies with a view to massive recharging and maintenance work using sand dredged from the Gironde entrance channel.

Did you know ? The dune in front of the campsite is designed to protect it. It has been rebuilt every year in the spring for three consecutive years, and it is imperative to preserve it so that it can prevent high tidal coefficients or potential winter storms. An access to the beach is drawn in the sand to reach the ocean, it is thus important to respect this dune.
